Alchemy fonts were designed by Jeremy Tankard.

The Middle Ages is perceived as a time of magic and mystery when many bizarre symbol alphabets were developed.  Certain activitie and beliefs were deemed heretical, even punishable by death and many of the alphabets from these times were created as a means to codify a text – to keep it secret and safe.  It is this that has influenced the Alchemy type, more than an attempt at a direct representation.
