Azbuka Fonts and Typefaces

'Azbuka' is Russian and translates as alphabet. It is also the name for the typeface designed by Dave Farey and Richard Dawson. The adage that a 'good text face will also work for display but not the other way around' holds generally true, but has been challenged more recently with a category of fonts that were created initially for display or primarily signage use. Interstate, DIN, Meta, Balboa and Frutiger all started out as display, and their appreciation for text came later. The family of Azbuka, inspired by road signs in Prague and metal street furniture in London, slips comfortably into this 'textplay' arena.
