Shire Types Fonts and Typefaces

Shire Types consist of six typefaces, which are named after the shires around the Black Country at a time when Shire horses were changed for the steam engine and the plough for the steam hammer.

A dense black letterform that would make a dark, tight text when set was created. The basic shapes were inspired by Grotesque and Egyptian lettering styles of the nineteenth century. The letters were first cast in Iron and then painted on Locomotives, Street nameplates and shop fascias, once commonplace, now many examples have disappeared. Now revitalised and combined these fonts are both plain and bold and eccentric.
